Title: Landing Gear with Springs or Solid link to save weight
Post by: leshoman on November 03, 2015, 11:11:19 AM
I have flown LE UL P-81 for about 60 hours and LE XL B-69 for about 160 hours with solid link in landing gear to save weight.  I have now changed both machines to spring links in landing gears.  It is the only way to go and i highly recommend the springs. Difference in Weight on LE UL was for each landing gear 6.3 oz. versus 18.1 oz with spring.  This equates to about 24 oz or 1-1/2 pounds of extra weight total.  Springs i used were from McMaster Carr, part number 9573K81 and cost about $ 8.00 each.  Springs make a major difference when not landing on smooth surfaces or working on short landings.

Great info Les. I have been thinking about this very subject, concerned about added weight. Guess i'll go ahead and add the springs. Not worried too much about weight now anyhow! :emoji_u1f608:

With added weight of engine may need heavier springs. the springs I have were pre-loaded 1/4" and with me in machine sets at about the 1/2" point or a little over.
