Title: Oil Cooler Bypass Filtration?
Post by: Aerodude45 on December 14, 2015, 05:44:34 PM
Has anybody tried running a bypass oil filter off of the holes for the oil cooler?

I've heard of engines running bypass/ partial oil filtration for improved reliability on the idea that if the oil filter becomes clogged the oil will still be able to remain at adequate pressure to lubricate the engine and prevent it from seizing. According to the oil circuit diagram below, the oil cooler runs parallel with engine oil. When the oil is hot and oil pressure is lower, the pressure relief valve closes and forces all of the oil through the oil cooler.

My theory is that an oil filter connected where the oil cooler was would safely provide bypass oil filtration. Even when the pressure relief valve closes at higher temperatures, an oil clog bad enough to stop oil from flowing through the filter would cause enough back pressure to open the pressure relief valve and allow oil to flow. Higher-than-normal oil pressure with a hot engine would then be an indication that the filter may be clogged.

I have installed a remote filter on the cooler circuit... Have it installed for several years!

Sweet! I just ran my engine with one installed. Bumped oil pressure up a few PSI, but otherwise no issues.

I had originally planned on doing the filter off the oil pump, but those hose fittings were just sitting there on top the crankcase, and that oil pump cover seems awful heavy.
