I will have a halfVW 92mm with 82mm crank, guesstimating about 40hp. what is a recommended carb and size, I would like something easy to setup and maint. free so to speak, no carb heat to install or if so something easy to do.

Single carb, dual carb etc.? No one recommends anything?

The dual carbs I had on my first engine were Mikuni VM28's. Worked very well, easy to set up for the most part. Had nice short intake tubes welded to the heads. Nice and warm behind the heads.
The engine I have now has one Mikuni VM32 carb with a long intake tube wich sweats quite a bit in humid conditions. Joe Engleman designed and built this engine and also designed a type of carb heat system that uses hot engine oil that helps with the intake sweating. I have never had an issue. Very strong engine. There are drawings in the files section on this group that shows how he made the carb heat .
There are pros and cons with either way to go. Dual.. no carb heat needed ,no long intake needed. Single carb.. only one to mess with.
They both work well. Most go with the dual carbs because they have been used and proven for quite awhile.

For the Dual setup do you think the 28's are large enough for a 40 HP?

I believe Joe Spencer used 28mm carbs on his Casler 45hp.

With carbs it is *always* better to go a bit small rather than a bit large. Not to mention that we are not turning up these motors very high.

Ok, just got off the phone with Central Snowmobile, they of course do not have salvage parts anymore, so everything is new, The guy Max there is pretty knowledgeable.
he is getting me everything I need (for a motor cycle configuration that is, wink wink, you do not want to mention a plane) here is what was discussed and what i will need.
1. Two Mikuni 28mm carbs
2. Dual Cable, the throttle end will have a barrel connection (I just said I can make and adapter for throttle)
3. Two Choke Adapters adapter kits for the carbs which has the original lever choke.
4. the dual cable choke cables which comes with a T-Conector and the switch and the switch which is a toggle type with very little throw which he said is all is needed.
5. Two barrel style Rubber flanges to mate to the premade heads i got from Scott Castler.
Anyone know of anything else they got to adapt the carbs? I'm still not sure about the jetting yet have to read a little further on this.
