Title: Aileron Hinge Blocks

[font="Calibri",sans-serif]Got most of my ribs built for my LEXL and will be starting the spars soon! Looking a little ahead at the [/font]ailerons I have run into an area I just can’t get a grasp of, the hinge blocks. Page 52 (of the plans) calls for 4 hinge blocks. I know these go on the aileron end ribs. Page 37 shows a hinge block attached to rib 6. Do you use the same type of block as described page 52? If so I assume you don’t use 3” bolts for the hinges indicated on page 50.

Help! What am I missing?
 
 FYI: I am building my wings using Iron Design LLC plans.

Tom, I will try to help here.  

• Your page 37 does indeed say (4) hinge blocks. But it does not say these are identical.  (per side of aircraft) 
• Your page 50 shows you how (1) hinge block looks, this one being placed between your end two ribs.. Made to fit your aircraft, or better yet, made to fit your two end ribs.
• Your page 52 shows how the other (3)  can/should look pretty close with approx measurements, I would make these consistent with each other. You will have a pretty good bonding surface if made this size.
• Now for the 3" callout for the bolts.. I would prefer to "call this out" as using a bolt to fit correctly for length.  And this of course would depend on exactly how you made your blocks in thickness as well as the final thickness of the gap and the list goes on. I showed on my plans how we use a very simple and easy to make delrin bushing to fit into the hinge blocks AND provide a spacing for the ailerons. Not the only way of course but a good way, with smooth feel, no oil, super long lived method. But of course, safety precautions still prevail for the nuts/bolts.

Perhaps one less road block for forward progress for many.
