This video was Edited by my good friend Mr. Lee Fischer from Larsen, WI. Hope to have a winter video with the Slug on Skis pretty soon.

Hope you enjoy this video from about a year and a half ago

Nicely done, Scott.  At this time, mid-December, I really like the green grass and blue skies.

We displayed our "retired" LEU Treehugger at an airport display last summer, and an RV-8 builder/friend took an interest in repairing it.  He wanted to learn about wood/fabric wings, so he and a couple others are heavy into it.  I'll probably fix up the fuselage, and we'll have to come up with an engine with more beans than our 29 HP half VW, which probably was a significant factor in the "mishap" which grounded it.  All kinds of suggestions, from upgrading it, to using a full VW, and the Verner 3 cyl radial would be real nice.

Your video will inspire us.

Hi, Tom. Sorry to hear of your mishap with the Treehugger. Just trying to learn all I can here. If it isn't to private a matter could you please tell of the mishap ? I have just bought a lightly used two cyl engine which the seller figured has about 32 hp. Dual ignition with a single Zenith underneath, 92mm cyls with stock stroke crank. I had thoughts about going straight to four cylinder and it seems like you might too. Are you aware of any others going straight to four cyls. with an LE or LEXL ? Thanks.

Dave, in a nutshell, Treehugger landed in a tree after takeoff when, apparently, a tailwind pushed the airplane forward too fast for the climb rate.  The airplane's landing gear got caught by the tree limbs, pilot climbed out, no injuries.  Airplane sustained most damage during its extraction from the tree, when we cut a limb and it fell to the ground.  We knew our engine was too low powered, and were making plans to upgrade it.  Day late, dollar short.

I think it is commonly agreed that around 35-37 HP is a safe choice for the half VW in the LEU (and maybe the XL, too?).  I have heard of others talk of a full VW, but don't know of any actually done.  We would have to do some calculating to see how the CG changes, etc.  Still a way off for this airplane project.

The 4 cyl VW full case is to heavy. The extra hp does not cancel extra weight. Best choice is 1/2VW with 45 hp
And build it light with good prop.

Thanks for the info and insight, Lads. Those videos are fun to watch. I've got a question now about how much wind, buffeting etc. hits the pilot with the open side, triangular fuselage configuration and admit to thinking about a ~ 26" wide enclosed cabin XL fuselage.  I know it'll have to be built very light but I like to fly year round when possible including skis. Just how much buffeting / breeze do you get on a rating of 1 to 10.  ?  10 being no problem at all...1 being horrible and somewhere between 5 and 9 not too bad if you dress right. Are different types of windshield designs better than others ?

One other question while we're at it, with the fuel tank above your head, what are you using for a fuel gauge ? Thanks..

The rounded windshield i have on the Red Eagle has a lot less turbulence behind it than the square one on the yellow one.  the square one needs a little more wing area up high to widen it out at narrow part to keep air off pilots face and neck.  Fuel gauge adds weight, best bet is to determine you fuel usage per hour and get a stop watch and put on panel and use it.

I have tried quite a few windshields over the past few years as well and am very happy with the Joe Engleman Designed Motorcycle style version. It sits farther back as in (closer to you) and really does a pretty good job of reducing the wind in your face and upper body..  Only draw back in my eyes are that you need to enclose the foot well area to add support for the windshield. I think Leonard AKA the Boss made a change to the L/E plans or at least made a amendment to or an option to this style windshield.
