Title: How many ribs?
Post by: okawbow on September 25, 2019, 06:39:23 PM
I can’t seem to find a number in the plans for XL ribs and nose ribs to make. From the plans, it looks like two ribs on the inside end of the wing. Also looks like two ribs on the outside edge, with the outer one being 1/4” ply. Would that add up to 22 stick ribs and 2 ply ribs? How many nose ribs?

I guess I should have built more models when I was a kid, LOL.

I am making progress. Have several ribs glued up. Going together well.  Cleaned out the garage and will build the work bench this weekend.

Where do the ply ribs go?

It looks like you need 13 ribs per wing. There are 11 location and the inner and outer are doubles up for 13 total. (26 for 2 wings)

Look at pages 36 & 37. The stations are numbered.

No solid plywood rib unless you put a thin plywood rib at the wingtip to seal the structure. Certainly not 1/4" thick. Here is a picture showing 13 ribs per wing. This is what my plans show and the way I'm building. I'm using IronDesign's K-block setup for my ailerons. I recommend adding IronDesign's drawings to Leonard's original plans for extra clarity. The number of nose ribs seems to vary by builder. Most are putting one at each main rib station, except they do not put one on the inner of the two root ribs. Many builders also add foam nose ribs between the ply ones to reduce the waviness of the leading edge covering.

I guess I’m seeing an 8mm ply. Covering of the end ribs on the drawing of the uncovered plane. That drawing only shows 10 rib placements also.

I wonder if there are more ribs on the XL than the LEU?

The drawing on Page A of the XL plans I have is not even an XL. The fuselage looks like a regular Legal Eagle. I'm not sure why it was included with the XL plans set.

Yes, the drawing on page A is a moral picture (my words, not Leonard's) and it's a basic LE. The XL has an additional rib per wing to make them longer for the 'full size' pilot.
