Title: Single Seater w/Folding Wings...
Post by: libertyman777 on September 07, 2020, 03:43:46 PM
Has anyone tried to adapt the cabin eagle wing folding design to the single seaters?  If not, why? Thanks.

I'm not terribly familiar with the LE/XL as I am building a Cabin Eagle.
However I don't think there is any place for the tubes to slide like they do in rear of the folding mechanism of the CE. You would probably have to build a mini cabin. A Cabin Legal Eagle if you will...

It has been done but you would have to redesign the fuselage cockpit area. Standard XL tapers to a single upper stringer that the wings mount to which does not allow spacing for the folding wind design.  Also even if you squared up the cockpit upper frame you would still only have 24inchs between the two wings - whereas the CE has 40 or so inches between giving room to fold.

The folding design is based on the location of the rear spar which is forward from the wing trailing edge more than 24/2.  you would almost have to move the rear spar back or like some other designs use a full wing length aileron design that you could then fold out of the way when folding the main wings - like a kitfox.

Any way you cut it that is a major design change to an XL!

Another option is to fold the wing from the front strut location which has been discussed before and incorporated from an airbike design.

The only difference I see so far between the Bike and the Tandem fold system is the way the main hanger tube is mounted to the upper fuselage...

Btw the rear "T" hanger setup does not appear to me to allow any transport of the machine.  Also once you get it all folded up, you have dismantled the whole wing and might as well take them off.

I initially looked at that system and thought the same and decide against using it.  I was also concerned with how easy it would be to poke a hole in your leading edge with the sliding bar if you are not careful.  I plan on just making some supports to help with dismantling the wing - helping hand system - look a Les's setup on his Toy hauler :)
