Title: 1/2VW Intel Needed
Post by: challenger_i on May 14, 2021, 02:03:36 PM
Gents, short of pulling a head, and measuring, is there a means of determining the displacement of a cut-case 1/2VW?

   Thanks!

Here's some reading on it...  https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/archive/index.php/o-t--t-114707--.html (https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/archive/index.php/o-t--t-114707--.html)

If it's a Hummel, it is most likely one in the list below.

2 CYLINDERS ENGINES

28 hp    88 mm bore x 69 mm stroke  840 cc  85 to 103 lbs.
Options – New Case , Battery ignition, Dual ignition, Bed, Radial or Mosler mounting, Starter, Alternator

32 hp    92 mm bore x 69 mm stroke  917 cc  81 to 103 lbs.
Options- New Case , Battery Ignition , Dual Ignition, Aluminum NiCom Cylinders, Bed, Radial or Mosler Mounting, Starter, Alternator

37 hp    92 mm bore x 78 mm stroke  1037 cc  81 to 103 lbs.
Options-  New Case , Battery Ignition, Dual Ignition, Aluminum NiCom Cylinders, Bed, Radial or Mosler Mounting, Starter, Alternator

45 hp    94 mm bore x 86 mm stroke    1200cc 84 to 102 lbs.
Options -  New case, Battery Ignition, Dual Ignition,Starter,Alternator Bed, Radial or Mosler Mounting. ( Note ) This engine comes standard with Aluminum NiCom cylinders.

All 2 CYLINDER EGNINES CAN BE MADE WITH THE CUT CASE OR FULL CASE VERSION

So, in other words, pull a head and measure.

There might be another alternative.  If you know who the builder was, and there's some builder markings on the engine, they might have some documentation as to the exact build.  You may be able to contact them for that info.

If not, then yes, you're going to have to pull a head and measure, to really know.

Thank ye, sir. Unfortunately, I do not know who built the engine.

Well, you could at least check the stroke with a thin piece of wood. If you are lucky, the stroke will be 78m or 84mm. Almost all the 1/2 VW's with 78mm stroke, have 92mm jugs and are 37hp. The 84mm strokers are 45hp.

You  could position the engine with a spark plug hole as the highest point and the piston on BDC before the exhaust stroke, then fill the cylinder with a light weight oil and measure the amount of oil it takes to fill the cylinder. Probably have to loosen the exhaust valve adjustment a little so it's completely seated to keep it from leaking

Good plan, sir. And, I get to pre-lube the top end in the process! :)

How about loosening both valves, just to be sure, turn it to bottom dead center, fill with oil, then catch and measure all that is pushed out when you turn it to TDC?

Well, have the beastie in my shop, at last. Is a cut-case engine, has the conical motor mounts, and, shockingly, Mosler heads. Also has spacers under the cylinders. Fairbanks mag. Cute little thang!

Prolly a stroker then...  The spacers are there to set the compression ratio.

 That was my thinking.
