Title: LEXL Plans Clarification (Diagional Gusset) Page 37B
Post by: pappyadkins on June 12, 2021, 11:28:55 AM
Question for my fellow builders... I had made an assumption on the drawings, but started questioning my thinking... Can y'all clarify the size for me... The drawing says "3 ply" & maybe an 8 or 1/8 can't read my copy well on page 37B - Is this to be the same thickness as the rib gussets (.8mm) or the Spar Plywood (1/8") or something totally different... Thanks in advance for y'alls help... david

1/8" ply. My 1/8" Birch ply has 6 plies. This area needs to be very strong to prevent wing flexing.

Thank you!!!! That confirmed what I thought... I agree with ya that it probably needed to by the 1/8" ply and was also concerned that this area needed to be very strong to prevent wing flexing.  So THANK YOU VERY MUCH for helping me make up my mind....

BTW, that's one of the main reasons I like to be part of this group... NICE & Very HELPFUL!!!  HAPPY BUILDING Y'ALL!!!!

One other thing I forgot to mention. The drawing's dashed lines are incorrect, in my opinion. The diagonals (except the one under the fuel tank, are supposed to fit on top of the bottom spar caps. I drew a modified page to put in my plans. The Wing Video from Leonard shows the diagonals on top of the bottom spar caps at 32:40 and again at 34.15 where he describes the diagonals. The video is of the LE wing, but the construction is similar, especially for the diagonals. The LE used compression struts on each side of the designated ribs, but the latest LEXL plans state only put compression struts on one side of a rib, not both sides.

I have had some questions myself on the diagonals. My drawings show the diagonal in the same plane as the bottom cap strip. They call for a 3/4 "gusset" stuck in the inside angle glued to the diagonal and the bottom cap. Nowhere do my drawings call out 1/8 ply. gussets. I don't have a 37B. Being on top like your drawing has many advantages. One it butts into the 1/4" intercoastal and the 1/8 ply spar web with a drastic increase in glue surface. A bonus is the diagonals can actually pass thru the rib above the bottom rib strip. Drawing does call to spacer and glue at the rib your traveling thru. I do like the 1/8" ply gusset. Again adds glue surface but I don't see how your gusset glues in unless it goes between the diagonal and bottom cap. I don't have a problem with that but your drawing shows it on top of the diagonal. Wouldn't that be 3/4" above the bottom cap. I like the idea of the ply gusset being between the two. Can see no negatives. My drawings have seen a few changes. Is no.7, possibly the first one sold to a builder the earlier being beta test drawings. A rainy morning at Oshkosh I had taken shelter in a tent that housed a legal eagle and someone's short wing mock-up. When I go to Oshkosh I always carry money to buy gifts for my wife and have a little to burn a hole in my pocket. Leonard ran across the field and into the tent and I bought a set of drawings.

There is a 3/4" thick triangular block glued to the side of the diagonal, the spar web, and on top of the spar cap. The 1/8" ply is glued to the triangular block and diagonal. I'll modify my drawing to show the block in red and the 1/8" ply gusset in yellow. I also added the compression strut since my drawings on the pages before 37b show the front end of the diagonals butting against the compression strut side. I forgot about the compression strut in my previous drawing, so I updated it and am renaming Page 37b as Page 37K. I also found a photo of construction in progress.
