Title: Strut: Cut 15' Wedge
Post by: Vince Carucci on October 13, 2022, 06:22:27 PM
The drawings show a 5 degree bend on the top and bottom strut mount for the rear struts. The drawing also says to cut a 15 degree wedge for bending. Why is a 15 deg. cut necessary to make a 5 deg. bend? It seems the gap would be to large to weld.

Is there a good explanation for this difference?

Chuck in Indiana's build has a comment of how he cut his struts.  Check it out. My guess is it's a typo and should say bend to 5 degrees.

I looked it up.  It's on page 25 of the build.

I could not find how Chuck did his...  I found a YT video of course...  It should be set to start at the "reverse method".  I assume he means it is reversed from when you don't know what the desired angle is ahead of time.

If the 5 degrees is the actual bend you need on your airplane,  you will want to cut half of that off each side of a line drawn around the tube.  So 2.5 degrees each side of a line that is perpendicular to the long axis.

Below is a pic of a test cut out of paper.  The pie cut wedge looks to be about 6 degrees but the gap closed up nicely.

I just sawed it in half, ground one side perpendicular on the disk sander, ground a 5 degree angle on the other, welded them together.
