Title: Hall Wind Meter for AirSpeed
Post by: pappyadkins on October 23, 2023, 05:40:42 PM
OK I know many have used Hall Wind Meter on their Jury strut... I've seen several mount it closer to dash & run a tubing to get air... I'd like to keep my primary vision forward... As I say that I can hear my instructor, "Keep your head on a swival"... lol

Question to anyone that has remotely mounted your Hall Wind Meter...
1 Did you notice ANY performance issues, if so, what?
2 what size hose did you use (diameter & length please)

My thinking is you'll obstruct the air flow with tubing... maybe not... I think of the high dollar ASI are usually "piped" in sometimes with flexible tubing...

You *may* be over thinking it.  :) The Legal Eagle is very much an "attitude" flier. I occasionally look at the Wind Meter (which is remarkably accurate btw) but you can fly it without any instruments at all.BTDT. :) I, personally, wouldn't add the weight and complexity of pitot tube, hoses, clamps, etc.

Chuck nailed it. Airspeed is a luxary with the legal eagle. Her stall is so mild that it's not like she tells you when she is done flying like a cub, more like she starts complaining to you that she doesn't like how slow she is flying and eventually tells you she is done climbing and makes the controls nice and mushy, thats about it... But if you are interested in light simple airspeed ideas, I guess I didn't have anything better to do and did this instead of hall airspeed. Just a piece of fuel tank scrap and piano wire with a paddle safety wired to the end. Weighs a few ounces and calibrated out the car window ;) Both do the same thing, and I promise both are very easy to read on the Jury strut. Put it on your left strut as you will be looking that way in the pattern anyway... Pitot-Static Airspeed is definitely overkill in my opinion, just my 2 cents...

And before anyone asks... The 80 is to make hummel ultracruiser pilots question the magnitude of their investment

but no... i haven't seen the needle there... yet ;)

No cows were harmed on this sortie. :)
I put it on the right strut.. we have right traffic on 36, and *I think* it should be on that side with a ccw rotating engine.
