Title: Greeting - Starting a new Cabin Eagle project
Post by: Kiwi55 on May 20, 2014, 05:22:05 PM
Greetings,

I’m starting a Cabin Eagle project.

I discussed the plans situation with Leonard Milholland and bought the DE plans along with the available CE video. I will start by building the wing ribs from the DE plans and possible other components that are the same between the two models. Then I’ll purchase and switch to the CE plans when they become available. If for some reason the CE is not viable I will continue with a DE airplane. I’m not too fussed with the cabin part of the plane, but would like the folding wing option.

A little about me. I live in Carrollton Mississippi but I am currently working in Jefferson City Missouri and I will start the build here in MO. I am 58 years old and I have registered the N number N55ZK. The N number might tell you a bit more about me.

I’m planning on using KitLog to document the build.

I’m sure I will have plenty of questions, probably starting with interpreting the plans.

I’ve started putting the wing rib jig together and I have ordered enough material (I hope) to complete the ribs.

This should be fun.

…Paul

Welcome to the Nest Paul ! There are a lot of great guys on here that will be more than glad to help you along on your project. I also live in Mississippi. (In Flora, about 20 miles north of Jackson.)  I am building the LE XL. Almost finnished with the wings. Good luck on your build.:) Randy Q.

Welcome! I am building a Double Eagle and also wish it had folding wings. Did Leonard tell you which parts are common to both the DE and CE. My ribs and nose ribs are done and my spars are done except for the attach fittings.

Rich,

I sent Leonard an email on Friday asking that very question.
I'll let you know what he says

Rich,
I got a response from Leonard and he said the wing spars and wing fittings are the same.
I'm sure that is not all that is the same, but it answers my question and I will continue work with the spars.

Thanks Paul,
I will continue with my fittings as well. Keep us posted on any more you hear from the Boss.

I have completed building all the ribs.
I have started laying out the wing spars. I have a question. I notice in the wing video for the DE that the spar top o\and bottoms are tapered at the wing tip ends. How far from the end does the taper start? Is the taper necessary? OK 2 questions.
Thanks...Paul

Hello All:

I bought the XL plans and was going to start the build this winter, but am now intrigued by the cabin eagle.  Any performance numbers yet, ie gross weight, empty weight, climb rate, landing and takeoff distance, cruise and max speed, fuel burn?

Kinda hard to get performance data when the prototype has yet to fly.......  ;)

Start building ribs, they will work for either aircraft.

Thanks, I will start the XL ribs and hang tight for the numbers.  I imagine the double eagle, slightly less drag, higher cruise, more fuel burn.  Will wait to see.

Thought I'd update my progress on the CE.
I have completed assembling one wing including the compression struts and diagonals. I have not yet done anything with the ailerons as I know they are different from the DE. Assembly of the 2nd wing is underway.
I also completed the 8 wing to fuselage fittings and am currently cutting out the wing to spar fittings.
I've asked Leonard what I can start next using the DE plans.
