Title: Spar fitting angles
Post by: Richfroh on November 22, 2014, 10:03:10 PM: Is the angle of the Double Eagle wing strut fittings critical? I cannot find any reference to the installed angle and I am ready to drill my spars for them. Should they be inline with the stut? If so, how do I get the proper angle since my fuselage is not built yet?

All the DE builders I'm aware of have built the fus first - I think you probably have a question for Leonard - there may be some slack in how the fitting lines up to the lift strut angle with designer approval...

Post by: rfeenstra on November 23, 2014, 02:08:54 PM: I built the wings first. I calculated the angle using distances derived from the plans and some geometry equations. I also figured the effect of dihedral on the fitting angle. It came out within a degree or so.

Leonard has mentioned that the angle is different for the Cabin Eagle.

Post by: Tom H on December 12, 2014, 06:57:56 AM: Rich, on my set of DE plans #C-51, page 42 (4/17/10) shows the angle to be 30 degrees. That is what we used when building the wing. I have not measured the actual angle between the wing and strut. But, from visual observation, the alignment between the strut and the strut attach fitting on the wing seems right on.

Seems Rich is trying to find the attachment angle for the strut fittings, not the root fittings. I could not find that dimension in the DE plans I checked.

If no angle dimension can be found I would probably drill only the bottom hole and locate the other holes after the plane is rigged. Access to the bolts could be through a lightening hole in the spar web.

We've sure have been off the mark with the response to that question - see DE Sheet 41 attachment that accompanied my request for assistance from Leonard & Tom Hubbuch that I just sent out...

And, now, I wonder how we did install the fittings. We finished the wing before the fuselage was finished. Maybe just made some measurements, allowed some dihedral, and installed.

I'll go to the airport and measure the angle. Even though Stubby is a "bastard" DE, these parts are built to the plans. May take several days to get it.

Post by: Tom H on December 14, 2014, 03:21:45 PM: I got out to the airport and measured the angle between the bottom of the spar and the main strut. It was 30.5 degrees. Checked both sides, they agree.
Hopes this answers that question, finally. Maybe this info can be put onto DE Plans P41 (Spar Plate 4 Req) and put into the downloads for perpetuity.

Post by: docmatt on January 18, 2015, 08:07:30 PM: I see this is an old thread. I drew a scale picture to find the angle. Turned out to be almost exactly 30 degrees.
