For those of you using Black Max wheels.
What size rim and tire are you using? I see there are two rim widths 4" and 6". this is thru Aircraft Spruce.

Frank, I used the 6" wheel, but I see no reason why the 4" wouldn't work, too. The tire would be easier to mount on the 4".

I like the tire you went to it appears to be a bit taller than the originals. I'll be operating out of a improved pasture and am not sure what's best.

The 6" wheel with the Carlisle tire will work nicely.

I use the 6" and would recommend them, especially for rough non smooth hard surface with the compression spring in gear linkages.

The following Nylon wheels are offered in 4", 5" & 6" on the Aircraft Spruce website. They claim to be as much as 60-70% lighter than aluminum. They are light, inexpensive and sound ideal. Does anyone have any experience with these wheels? Do they have any short-comings that aren't clear from the advertisement?

Azusalite wheels are made from engineering grade Nylon. Combines high tensile and compressive strengths and good impact resistance. Excellent for many homebuilt and ultralight aircraft applications since they weigh 60-70% less than aluminum wheels. Azusalite wheels are offered in 4", 5" and 6" models.

Be advised there are two versions of the 'Turf Saver' tires. One is less weight than the other, the lighter one you want is the 'Turf Saver II' per the above link.

The photo I posted in the previous message is the heavier version, but the link is correct. The Turf Saver II has fewer plies and has a more rounded tread.

Yeah, I figured the ones without shoulders would be the ones. Ordered them, the lighter ones, from Amazon aviation dept. ;-)

Don't want to beat this horse, but some clarification may be in order.
The spun aluminum Black Max wheels are VERY light! They are sourced from the racing kart community where ounces and strength are a premium. The comparison of the nylon wheel weight to "aluminum wheels" is a comparison with cast aluminum aircraft wheels. Those cast wheels are much heavier than the Max aluminum wheels. And with aluminum wheels you don't have to worry about breakage due to impact or side loading.
Use the nylon wheels if you wish, but the Black Max wheel and brake system is the Cadillac of ultralight wheels. Once you have flown them you will consider them worth every dollar. :)

I was originally going to use the 6" nylon wheels. Bought a pair, very heavy, they go round and round good and would work with no breaks or their drum drum brakes but I made a set of bicycle disk brakes for them. As you tighten the bolts in nylon wheel it changes shape.

Thanks for the pirep, Les, that will be useful for future builders.
I realize the Eagles are designed on the premise of enabling us to fly on the cheap. The temptation is strong to look for the most inexpensive components and build techniques available in order to meet a very limited budget. But I think those who have actually flown Eagles will agree that there are times when it is necessary to spend whatever bucks is necessary in order to have a safe and functional aircraft. If the budget doesn't exist for safe and functional components...then the decision to build an aircraft probably needs to be revisited. Cheap ain't the best option when 500' AGL over the trees or when transitioning a flying machine back to an earthbound craft.
Buy good stuff once and enjoy it, or cheap stuff and either hate it or replace it. This applies particularly to wheels, brakes, wing spars, AN hardware, and engines.

I was leanin heavy to the Black max anyhow. That's done!
Now I got the wheels and tires settled I find another tire, Turf-Glide tundra tire. A bit taller and heaver than the Turf Saver, but may be useful in rough fields.

Interesting.....In what way or direction did you notice distortion? I guess you're refering to Azusalite reinforced "plastic" wheels, right?

They woggle side to side. As bolts tightened various amounts side ti side not good.

A "friend" gave me three sets of Azulite wheels that are totally wasted. The 'rim' had cracked from the hub and about 50-60% has separated. Seems they don't like side loads.... I believe they were used on a heavy Mini-Max or similar aircraft. I want a set of Black Max but can't substantiate $450!! The Huffy's are working well for now.....
