Title: Dynamic Balancing and the 1/2 VW
Post by: Gabe on January 19, 2015, 08:49:32 PM
I have a factory built half vw from Christine Aero.  A company that I believe has been out of business for years. It has some severe vibration issues, notably in the area of 1800 rpms, but generally shaky overall. There has been some speculation that older engines were built without counter balanced crankshafts and that mine may be one of them. I tried dynamically balancing the engine and with a prop flange counterweight I got it down to .85 inches per second around 3k rpms. (it was twice that originally) Does anyone have experience with balancing the half vw and know how many IPS I can expect a high powered half to be making?

Call Scott Casler, he knows these engines inside out...

Scott was the one that mentioned that it might not have a counter-weighted crankshaft. I intend to pull off a jug or take a look at the crankshaft with the bore-scope.
What I really want to know is how much vibration does the average half-vw produce? Has no one else dynamically balanced their half-vw? Surely not. I think Lycoming's acceptable range is up to .7 inches per second. However, I think most folks try to get below .2 IPS.
I'm just curious what to expect from a 45 hp half-vw. I have an extrememly small sample size to compare to.

Gabe:
There are a number of  on Smart-phones App'S to display vibration that cost around $5... Maybe this is the space to ask for some flyer feedback?... App's are available for both the IPhone and Androids... I am making a 1/2 Topic [Smartphone 1/2 Vw Vibration recorded at 3000 rpm] to Post .pdf printed graphic results in...
