Title: Quick and cheap way to get 2 cyl appearing U/L engine
Post by: Niri Tawa on February 16, 2015, 01:30:02 PM
Why not just take the case, block off the 2 rear cylinder and pushrod tubes, and NOT cut the crank and cam? I know it will be a little heavier, I don't care about that, I'll be building a 1,200cc twin.

If you don't care about the weight then do your worst...

This way, if I don't like the power, I'll just install the parts for the two rear cylinders, and will not have wasted money on parts.

Will the engine be balanced with the extra crank throws without their connecting rods and pistons???

I suppose you could mount another chunk of iron equivalent to the rod and piston weight to the rod bearing journals...

By this time you are basically only saving the weight of 2 jugs and 1 head... Better off with all 4 cylinders and nickie jugs

Niri Tawa is a NOOBIE making noob assessments....

JUST removing the con-rods and pistons and blocking the cylinder holes WILL NOT WORK!!!!
You HAVE to dynamically balance the crankshaft!!
And Why have that "empty" crankshaft spinning in the crankcase??
It balances nothing!
Same for the camshaft albeit at a smaller amount.
It will shake itself apart if you try that!!

Problem SOLVED, I am putting a 4AO084 (I have six 084's, and two 042's all running), to get the horsepower/performance numbers.

THIS will be interesting.....

The 084 engine is on the airframe, and plumbed to the tank. I will fly it this afternoon. depending on how well it flies with the four cylinder, I may put the two cylinder, 25 HP 042 on it, and fly it tomorrow. To be a true copy of the original C-2 it only has to climb at 250 FPM, which I think that the 042 will slightly better, because of it's much lighter weight. We will see.

SO.... Sabrina...... How'd it go???

Worked just fine with the 084, about 600 FPM rate of climb, topped out at 75 indicated, on a two blade, wood Tennessee Propellers prop. It looks like it burned a tick over 2GPH, but that number is extrapolated "Eyeball engineering". Next, I want to try the 042, when I get the prop that is made for that engine. If I can get 400 FPM out of it, that will better the original aircraft's performance slightly. Now that I know what the airframe does with a 42 HP 125 pound engine, the plane ought to perform slightly BETTER with a 37 HP half VW engine that is considerably lighter than the 4A084.The reason for the 042 engine test? To see if I can use the design as a motor glider.

YEA!! GOOD to know!! Congrats!

Anxiously awaiting the O42 results!!  Yes, less HP but also less WEIGHT. Very important!

Bob, I will get the 042 prop sometime next week. As soon as I know, you will know.

Congrats on the flight! I'd like to see photos of your plane. Also some details of the 084 and 042 engine install.
