Yesterday was a rare day for this time around here. CAVU, 60 degrees, slight breeze. So, we went out to the airport to put the final finished 62x26 Performance Prop on Stubby. Did some checks and adjustments and went flying. I flew for a bit, then one of the partners decided to fly it, too. Howard, for a variety of reasons, had not flown it for 9 months. So, after a review of all of the sophisticated systems, and some taxi practice, he took off. I took a video of his take-off with my phone. Not the best quality, but hopefully it comes through. I know most all of you could hardly wait to see Stubby fly.

How long is the airstrip there? It looks like it hit 50' agl in like 500 or so feet.

The strip is 1700 ft from fence at the take-off end to the trees at the other.

how kool is that Tom
We got an engine run this week - building new inlet manifolds this weekend
if all goes well we do weight and balance next week and send the paperwork off
Im close
Q: did you leave the air deflectors in under the barrels, - there spose to be there in the vehicle
but we have way better airflow ?
Love the video hope to have you one real soon

I think it is imperative to leave the air deflectors under the barrels. These keep the air flowing all the way around the cylinders. In fact, we added an additional piece of sheet metal under the center part of the head to eliminate that short cut for the air to take. I finally found the write-up and photos on Bob Hoover's (RIP) blog:

I think Bob was well respected by VW engine builders, overall, and his blog is a goldmine of info.
