Title: Ky EAA Sport Aviation Weekend Fly-in
Post by: Tom H on September 08, 2015, 05:50:19 AM
For anyone in the area, the 41st annual Ky EAA Sport Aviation Weekend at Rough River State Park Airport  (2 India 3) will be held this weekend (Sept 11 - 13).  The main fly-in day is Saturday.

I'm planning to fly DE Stubby down again this year, and hope anyone interested in seeing a real, live DE can stop by and take a look.

Where are you coming from, Dan?  Should be pretty good weather on Sat, if you can believe the forecasts.

BG...

Probably late afternoon.   This close in, they may have a good bead on the weather forecast.

Clouds were swift, rain did lift...  I ran in to this Hubbuch guy as soon as I showed up. 8)

It was great to finally meet Dan.  All this time he was hiding out about 100 miles south of me; he never let on.  It's great that Dan and Steve are heading up this site and spreading the word on the Eagles.

We were, once again, jinxed by the weather.   The front from up north came through Fri afternoon with high winds, clouds and rain popping up all around.  Then, Sat was looking great, but winds were way higher than a lot of flyers like.  I was hoping to get some flying time in while there, but too windy for me.  Luckily, Sunday, departure day, started clear and calm and I headed home in maybe 5 mph winds, with 6 mph being reported near my destination.  Stubby is not exactly a speedster,  and with mostly headwinds I averaged only about 60 mph ground speed, and it took about 1-1/2 hours to get home, and a lot can happen weather-wise in that time.  When I arrived winds were reported at 9 mph gusting to 15, but, luckily mostly in line with the runway.  It was a pucker-up situation during landing, but all went well.  I caught the winds at the right time - just after putting the airplane in the hangar, the winds shifted to 90 degree crosswind and almost blew the sock over.

We'll try again next year.

I hope it was not too big a let down...

he never let on.

Had I let on, I would not have been able to shine you on when we finally ran into each other...

Dan:
     What's this thing?

Tom:
     A Double Eagle.

Dan:
     A what?

Tom:
     Double Eagle.

Dan:
     What is that?

Tom:
Why do you want to know?

At this point, I figured I had better let him off the hook... :))

Well, believe it or not, there are way more folks that not seen nor even heard of the Eagles.  So, I always get those questions, and am always happy to explain.  They all go away marveling at the concept, some wondering why anyone would fly it!

So, Dan, glad I could introduce you to DE Stubby!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm glad I came on up so you could as well...

Stubby is a fine ship, and the pair of you make great ambassadors for the Eagles.

Next time we will get some take-off and landing video. ;)
