Brock's bits - LEXLV3 / Re: Wheels and Landing gear

Feels good to finish a stage or goal.  Felt good to get these two landing gear both welded up.  I'm thinking the suspension/cabine should go quickly. Then, then I'll get to see it with wheels on.  Ok, enough celebration.

The gear, as some have said is a lot of welding and figuring.  Two things learned.  One, I tend to not use enough amperage when I weld (afraid of burning through) which in the end caused me to heat the overall part more than should be.  Still don't know how to get over this learning hurdle but occationally I get it right and am rewarded with a beatiful weld.  Like the other day when a friend wheeled his champ restoration to get tabs welded.  We were both impressed with the first weld which turned out to be luck.  Ha.

The second lesson, can I call it that since I still don't know the fix, is that sometimes welding bends things. Like the this picture with the straight edge.  Seems after welding that last little brace my main gear bent a degree or two.  I imeadatly know something was off on that first gear leg when it didn't swing as nice before after welding.  Deciding I had gotten it too hot (see lesson one) the second gear leg I carefully welded in short stiches and let the tube cool then came back and welded some more.  Still this second leg came out the same as the first one.  Oh good, I thought, now the camber is welded in.  Live & Learn.

Happy Resurection Day! (Easter) to you all.

DAMiller,

You asked about how I did my tank... hijacking my avionics SimpleFly thread.  ::)

Looking on my build log, I did not make a single note about it! So...

My Legal Eagle tank is aluminum, five gallons, in the left wing per plans. It was fabricated out of 0.050" 5052 and was TIG welded. The filler is a billet weld-on bung and cap. Amazon, Summit Racing, not sure. For a vent I simply drilled a small hole in the cap. I fabricated a small sump (maybe 2"x2"x2") near the rear of the tank which extends down below the bottom surface of the wing. You might be able to see it in one of the pictures. On the bottom of the sump is a drain plug, and on the side of the sump, running horizontal and forward, is a 1/4 turn valve with an AN fitting. Aluminum fuel tubing down to the engine held along the fuselage tubes with Adel clamps.

The total weight of the tank was 3.3 pounds (I individually weighed everything on this build, I am detailed like that). As I recall, this was about half the weight of the rotomolded plastic one used on the Mini-Max.

I had to get very good at TIG welding for this tank. I am no pro, but now one of the better welders at the EAA chapter. This was some of the most difficult welding I have done. I also failed at welding a tank when working on my Thatcher CX4. If you want to see that mess it is here:

Tig welded my previous project and I agree that welding thin aluminum is difficult, so difficult that I ended up having an expert do it, Pictures of my welding and the experts below. I will probably do a riveted tank for my XL.

Great job on all your videos! Just started my build this year and have found them very helpful working through the plans/drawings from Leonard. My fuselage is almost complete just waiting to see how your tank modification unfolds as I'll be trailering also.  But no rush, starting the tail today . . . it's a long and fun road ahead. Thank you!
