Approximate costs
« on: January 22, 2020, 06:38:28 PM »
Well, I have ordered my XL plans and have ordered the supplement wing package from Iowa.

Anyone have and approximate cost for the chrome moly for the fuselage $---------

And the approximate cost for just the wood package for the wing framework. $--------

I have my shop area almost closed in where I want it and gonna put a little heat and ceiling insulation in.

Table should be built soon. I may try to get steel locally and maybe drive to Chicago for spruce, conscerned about shipping costs for the 4x8 plywood piece.

Thanks for any help.

I spent about $1500 on the wings for wood, glue, etc, but NOT including clamps. Literally, more than a hundred of various design and sizes. Another couple hundred dollars for Aluminum to make attach fittings and tail tubing and then constructing a tube bender for the tail. (Bender is available for loan, look at the thread "Jigs and Tools for Loan" at the bottom of the forum thread list)
Just ordered metal yesterday, including steel tubing and aluminum sheet for tail ribs, instrument panel, etc. and SS firewall, and looks like will be about $1100. (I can drive/ have driven to pick it all up, so no shipping costs. This could be considerable because of the oversized spar cap and tubing lengths)
Still have to get my welding rig together. looks like folks have been doing that for around $600 but some of this is recoverable if you sell the rig when finished.
Hope this helps. Eagle on!
Rick

Thanks, that's perfect. Just about the same for steel and wood when you add in the torch set etc.  Back to the table and work area project. :D

Wood, Steel, and aluminum costs are about as stated for me also.  Only would state that hardware costs will be more than you would expect for all your bolts, cabling, and what not - I am probably pushing $500 for that.  then there is the wheels and brake systems - blackmax you are looking at anther 500.  Finally paint and covering will need to be added to that which is really dependent on what you are using for that process - from 500 to 5000 :).

Think the engine will then double the cost of everything else you have put into it!

And the lovely wife looked at the cost and the time and saw the Iowa prints said; Why don't you just go buy another airplane that I may actually go in with you. (Heck, never thought I would hear that.) She thinks I may get bogged down; It is a bit of a daunting, demanding and time consuming project.  Spruce came in about $1123 including shipping and without glues. Did not have the 3mm plywood in stock and none of the spruce is available in Chicago although I can hardly make the 1100 mi round trip for $175 UPS. She might be right. Thanks for info.

Could be.  My wife didn't get excited about flying until we got a ride in a Breezy! I'm rebuilding a wrecked Woody's Pusher now ----

I think she just can't see herself in a homebuilt airplane.

Strange. I was showing my wife some videos of Putt Putt doing stalls and a spin on Youtube last night, and she said, "That looks like fun! I would fly that..it acts like a slow Cub." She hasn't flown as PIC since the early 90s.  :o  :)
