Preparation and painting of the fuselage
« on: January 05, 2021, 12:06:03 PM »
Hi Guys.
As I make progress with the build of my DE fuselage (Will go in the rotisserie in a couple of weeks) I am thinking about the surface preparation and painting.
I could of course go with the typical sand blasting and powder coating options but Not sure i want to go in this expensive direction. And also the trouble especially with all the precautions and preparation needed for sandblasting as I don’t have exterior space to do it and I build in a relatively small garage.
I might go with simple hand tools to prepare the surface. Do you have simple rotary tools to recommend that could reach inside nooks and crannies to prepare the metal?
For painting, I heard that epoxy paint would not resist the outside uv rays.
I was also surprised to read that simple rustoleum paint could give very good and long term resistance results. Any of you guys have experience with simple rust paint? Does it make an adequate surface for the glue and fabric to hold on to?

Any recommendation and suggestions on the subject is welcome!

The one frame I painted, I had someone else blast it, and I flat out can't remember who applied it, but I used the Stits Two Part Epoxy primer, as I planned on using the Stits system on the Sonerai IIL that I never finished.

It will be super hard and time consuming to hand prep a previously welded fuselage.  Some ideas: FIRST and FOREMOST, degrease, using whatever means necessary.  THEN, I would try a coarse "Scotchbrite" pad wrapped around the tubes and scrubbed.  Use a "bristle wheel" or "bristle disk" on the clusters.  Apply self-etching primer (NAPA Martin Senour has one, there are others, and top with Rustoleum, BOTH from a quart can.  You can use a painters mitten on the tubes, or a tube roller, a better class of paint store will have either.  Use a WATER BASED adhesive when fabric covering to avoid lifting the paint.  It will probably look like you painted it with a mop, but the metal will be protected.

Wouldn't it be easier to have someone else blast and paint it, now that you've read that?  Even in rural Canada, there MUST be a body shop within an hour's drive, eh?

I agonized over cleaning and prepping my fuselage before painting. Living in Mississippi with the high humidity I was concerned that even if I got it sand blasted I would have to clean up surface rust before I could paint it anyway. Also concerned that you need to have very non aggressive sandblasting to avoid thinning out what are already very thin tubes.
I prepped mine myself and it really wasn't that much effort after all. I used fine sandpaper on a DA to clean up most of the tubing, then a wire brush on a grinder of drill to clean up the cluster. Some of the tight areas required smaller and smaller wire brushes.
I painted the fuselage with automotive grade epoxy primer and then top coated (all sprayed).
Came out great and wasn't half the effort I was worrying about.
