Varnish
« on: August 23, 2018, 05:48:04 AM »
I've started the wing assembly. So I should be ready for varnish in the near future. After reading all the posts, I decided to use a proper 2-part epoxy varnish from ACS. Some of those kits can include a reducer. My question is: what might be the benefits of using a reducer? Does it make application easier? Does it reduce the weight? I could save more than a few bucks by not reducing, but sometimes the lowest cost is not the highest consideration.

Hi Vince,

In Leonard's video I think he uses a standard Varnish and thinned with Turpentine. That's What is used on my DE nose ribs and skins. I used 2 coats and found it easy to coat. I am going to use the same for the rest of the wing. I used Valspar Boat Varnish. thinned about 20% (by eye :) )

Good to see you are off and running. you might recall we met at OSH17 last yeat

regards Paul

Thanks for the response all.

Paul, sure I remember you. I often tell of our meeting when I describe the global reach of the Legal Eagle forum and Airventure. I returned again this year for the 20th anniversary of the LE. There was a good showing of finished aircraft. The Legal Eagle squadron was looking formidable. I got to meet the Boss and other builders. I got a free coffee cup for having a build in progress. (I was willing to buy one, but don't tell Leonard)

It would be great if our paths crossed again. Good luck and best wishes.

Vince
