I just got my plans a couple months ago, I haven't even thought about starting on it, what has changed in the plans?

No changes in plans I'm aware of. That is a Leonard question.    this is only a change in material list to correct an omission of a tubing size for a gear piece and increase in a couple tubing sizes as a recent builder came up short.  MANY others had enough but I'd rather you have a little left over than having to order more.

I recently purchased plans for the XL for electronic download. The print on the pages have to be expanded 400% just to read them.
I have no idea what the actual size should be for the ribs and spars. I contacted Leonard and sent a check for full size patterns but never heard back from him.
Anyone know if there is a problem?

I had the same problem with printed plans: https://www.eaglersnest.com/forum/index.php?topic=1640.msg9317#msg9317

Same here, same here!😒
Bought plans to be downloaded and never saw a list /inventory/bill of tubing to be bought!
Bit the bullet and started measuring each tube on drawings, scaled them up and ended with the following:
3/4"ODX0.0035": 65'5" - ordered 70'
5/8"ODx0.0035": 64'9" - ordered 70'
7/8"ODx0.0035": 1'10" - ordered 10'
Landing gear / struts and miscellaneous not included.

I downloaded the plans a few weeks ago, and on page 80 of 84, there is a material list.  Of course it says 6-4-2013 for the date.

for those of you having issues with plans especially with the ribs suggest going to this site and purchase the supplemental plans (printed full-size ribs) - they are very nice and helped me build mine.  https://irondesigniowa.com/product-category/legal-eagle-xl-wing-plans-supplemental/

Also, I have a link to some of my files you are free to take advantage of - you can find it here - http://buildlog.virtualmakerspace.com/build-intro-info/

Getting ready to order tubing and from what I can tell, there are WIDELY varying opinions of how much of each size is needed. (For instance, one fellow estimates 70 feet of 3/4" tubing needed and at best, I can only come up with about 6 feet. Some folks show no 1/2" at all and I estimate around 20' required. The plans call for a couple of different pieces of 1 1/8" tubing, and try as I might, I can't find a single piece in the drawings) I know the materials list I have on hand in the plans is woefully wrong, so I am doing it the hard way and going through the drawings and adding it all up. Does anyone have an honest to goodness, been there, done that list of what they actually used for the fuselage?

the 1 1/8" x035  (5')  is used for the strut fittings,   the 1 1/8"x .120  (6") is used for the engine mount spools,   there is abt 22' of 1/2x035 used in the aft fuselage and rudder pedals.
3/4x049 is used for gear legs and 3/4x 035 for gear spring assy.   The material list is very close.   JohnB

I have to believe that my plans are a mix of LE and LEXL, especially the materials list. re:I am putting together an order and note the list has square tubing required as 1/2" X .035 and 1/2" X .049. In going over the drawings I note that the square tubing for fuselage wing attachment is .062" wall.(Perhaps it changed to .062 for the XL?) In order to get the list right I have to also consider the parts that I won't use as well, such as the 7/8" X .065 square tubing for wing strut attachment when using round, steel wing struts, since I will be using the aluminum streamlined ones. All in all, quite the Easter egg hunt, but I know there are a lot of changes and variations in the design and everything about it requires THOUGHT and EFFORT in planning. Fortunately, that's half the fun of building this thing. I didn't want a kit with holes pre drilled and step by step instructions, and that's not what this is. When it's done I can say that I BUILT it.

A buddy and I have been researching two airplane projects...one for him and one for me.  We each have built 2 other airplanes before.  We've watched a lot of videos and read lots of forums.  We've decided to go with the LEXL.  We want to get some material quotes locally as well as ACS and Wicks to see if we want to move forward before buying plans.

I made a spreadsheet with all the metal we need based on the file "XL materials list 11-24-09" in the files section.  As I review things I found the thread that says it changed once (needing 125' of 5/8x.035 instead of the 105'), and then this thread showing it's changed once again.

Is there an updated bill of material dated after 6-26-19 that JohnB posted about?  Is there any way we can get an updated file in LEXL files section?  I have my Excel file I can put in there when I have the correct numbers as it will make getting quotes very easy for others.

Thanks in advance for any help.
Currently building a "Fire Eagle" (LEXL with Kolb Firestar wings)
Built 23' Kolb Firestar 2, 91' CGS Hawk Arrow, 92' CGS Hawk Classic II and helped with many Bearhawk parts.

Thanks for the post, the "Material list" is a necessary evil that gets some bad press from time to time.  A LOT of plans sets don't even have one but Leonard and I decided to include one and the XL list has been tweaked a few times but it is REALLY close. I've welded MANY fuselages from it and I always have tubing left over.
The main issue is that every builder does not lay out their project in the same manner. 100 guys will build and have adequate material and 3 come up short as they didn't plan ahead.   The beauty of this Legal Eagle group is we have such diversity of experience,  guys that have build several planes and folks that have never built a birdhouse.
The "list" also doesn't allow for many "Do Overs" One builder welded 4 sets of rudder pedals, 2 yrs later when welding up the aft fuselage he runs out of 1/2 tubing but forgot he used up a bunch reworking parts..true story.

HOWEVER we are not above making a mistake and will quickly address any reported shortages    hope this helps
