Bending lower longerons at station 2
« on: December 11, 2020, 07:18:25 PM »
Hi again Guys.
I am tig welding my airframe and I now need to bend the lower longerons at section 2 to reach section 1. So... I am not too profiscient with gas torches.
I tried with 2 propane torched but I could not bring the joint hot and soft enough to bend easily as i think the joint weld with gear/wing bracket plates were sinking too much heat.
My question is: For those who did it, do I need to apply a lot of pressure on the tube to bend it or if it is hot enough, it should ben easily with not too much pressure?

If my propane torches are not hot enough, my next step is to use for the first time my acetylene torch kit which I am not too familiar with yet. I just want to go gradually as I want to be sure not to apply too much heat and damage the joint.

Thanks in advance for your advices! :)

See if you can get a cylinder of MAPP gas (or equivalent) for your propane torch. It burns much hotter than propane. If you get the longeron at the right temperature it should bend without much force applied. Unless you have a rosebud tip for your oxyacetylene rig, you might overheat the tubing in one spot instead of over a one or two inch area. I used MAPP gas. I bought it from HD and/or Lowes, called Bernz-o-matic Map-Pro
