Bruce the engine building partner had moved to Colorado Springs and I knew very little about Vw engines. I found a Vw type1 machinist that was interested in the Vw cut aspects. He was a performance head and tooling specialist. We hit if off - he gave me a scrap engine to disassemble and my education began. I actually had the whole build done at year end and then - I spent 5 months figuring out why the engine would rev up smoothly to a point and then spool down before the throttle was fully open - after hours of testing and asking others for clues tada... I ran the engine at different rpm's for 10 hours before I was ready to fly. ( In summary - the carbs will not stand vibration (see Les Homan's carb braces) and by design spit a little fuel once in a while) The 30 hp engine runs sweet on VM26-626 Japanese carbs, Bigger engines VM28's.

For a tall guy sanding the wing hanging vertically goes great with (sanding blocks in both hands). 2 Coats of varnish with a brush - see my web pages for more on that
