This is a comparison of various engines for the Legal Eagle UL and XL.  It is met to provide some in site for comparisons of the option. The prices may not be the latest because of inflation.

Thanks for the useful chart.  Once more engine (not really) to add.  There was a LE for sale on FB with a 4 cyl VW.  Had a rather large battery in halfway to the tail as well.

There have been a few other options that have been used and I think there are even more that have not been tried.  I am thinking seriously of the Polini Thor 303DH.  I also think the new engine Badlands (THUMP-AIR 4) is selling would be a great fit.  There have been some great strides made with single cylinder light engines over the last few years spurred on by the Paramotor industry.  Other engines that have been used are Kawasaki, Hirth, Rotax and I am sure more.

The Aero 1000 is another single cylinder 4 stroke which looks interesting.

Reviving this thread in an attempt to keep relavent info in one place.
@leshoman, Could you expand a bit on the rather large weight difference (~60 lbs) between the 23HP 'small block' and the 35HP 'big block', if both are equipped with flywheels and starters? Multiple sources are showing the core engine weights as being only about 20 or lbs apart, IIRC. I know the stronger reduction drive will likely be a couple of extra lbs & maybe a few more for the bigger flywheel, but would like some more insight on where the rest of that ~30 lbs is coming from. We've got an XL build in progress and would like to use the larger engine, but don't really want to end up with 4cyl VW-level weight on the nose. ;-) Thanks for any additional info you can share.
