Aileron rib cove clairification
« on: June 19, 2026, 07:37:32 AM »
I'm looking for clairification on how to tie together the ribs just forward of the aileron.  It seems, according to the attached pages, that the trailing edge of the ribs (after cutting loose the ailerons) gets 1/4 x 1/4" sticks between them, then either 1.5mm x 1-1/4" or 1mm x 1-1/2" ply across the full length.  What is your understanding and can someone post a close pic of the area.

BTW - the recent post from Kacmcoman was helpful but clear pics would help.  I am using the ironside style K-blocks.

Thnx!

According to the plans you glue a 1-1/4" wide strip of 1/16" plywood to the outer end of the top and bottom of each rib with a 1/4"x1/4" stiffener running slightly inboard or along the outer edge. I used a 1-1/16" wide piece because I'm using a slightly different closure design (Iron Designs). My 1/4"x1/4" strips are shown in the 1st photo. I also added balsa strips that I beveled so my fiberglass cove cover would fit properly. I made the fiberglass cover by epoxying a layer of FG cloth over a 4" PVC tube coated with carnauba wax.

Eagle wings are a big step up from mini-max in several ways.  Not the least of which are the alierons.  Leonard wanted to keep the bugs out but a side benefit in my opinion is airflow (lack of) around the leading edge pockets.  The max has those tele-flex  cables and are aerodynamically heavy to control.
