DE spar doublers/spacers

Plans page 43 shows a doubler/spacer on each side of the spar in addition to the spar web. I understand the need for the spacer on the side without the web, but is the spacer on the web side needed? Are they there to provide a specific dimension between the fittings, or is it for structural reasons? I plan on using separate wing attach bolts so I won't need the fittings to overlap per the plans.

It would be spacing only and i wish i did the same, if i built another i too would make different attach points 
would make it easier in assembly
