Spruce spar sticker SHOCK!
« on: July 26, 2019, 09:54:52 AM »
So, after inputting what I think I need to complete the spars for my XL less the cap strips and .8mm ply for the ribs (which I already bought) I went to check out and the cost was $781.00 plus $250 for shipping! (ACS)  Does that sound about right?

I bought two, 3/4" x 4-3/4' x 14 ft. spar stock pieces from ACS for $266. Part number 02-34434-14. This was in September of 2018. I'm sure prices have gone up. From the two pieces I bought, I cut all my spar caps, my diagonals, and my spar vertical pieces. I used a table saw with a thin kerf blade. Perhaps you could save some money by doing what I did. I do not know about shipping because I only live a few miles from ACS in GA and picked the wood up.

Same here. Significantly less to purchase the boards and rip them to proper dimensions. I dragged a trailer 10 hours round trip to ACS to save the shipping.

I was planning on ordering spar stock, 13 footers and ripping. Even thinking about buying a used planer if needed. I think I will look into scarfing the spar caps and even the ply web and see what UPS ground cost comes too. I'm in NJ, picking up at the store isn't an option. I stopped at a couple private lumber yards. When I mentioned I was looking for aircraft quality Sitka Spruce they looked at me cross eyed. Any other cost effective methods for procuring Spruce spar materials?

ACS just opened a branch in West Chicago. I do not know if that shows as a shipping location yet. Might want to call after Oshkosh to check their shipping rates. I made my spar webs from 4-foot long pieces of 1/8" ply. Scarfed with a belt sander on homemade jig. Worked great.

Genius! I did the same thing with a router and home made "scarf box". Don't see why either one wouldn't work on spar cap sized material either.
