Router?
« on: March 06, 2020, 06:37:05 AM »
Hi, folks.. I don't see a place for intros, so I'll just barge in.  :)
A friend just gave me his set of plans for an XL, and while I've built or restored 6 airplanes over the years, the only time I've needed a router was when I built a Great Lakes, and routed the spars. I borrowed one for that. I see several uses for one on this ship, and should buy one.
Menard's has several on sale this week, and 11% off to boot. I like the looks of the smaller ones, but will they do the job?
TIA

Yes, the small ones work fine, as I don't know what you would cut over stacked 1/4" pieces (to the limit of your router bit)  A friend and I cut and router out every part for both wings using metal template, stacked 3 high 1/4" (3/4"total) pieces,  in two hours, I was rough cutting out on the band saw to with 1/8" of line, drilling one pilot hole. He was stacking, drilling second location hole, and doing the router work in table. I was barely able to keep ahead of him.  And if behind, he would simple add the pilot hole task.  Goes extremely fast and that was with one of the small routers. (using standard bearing router tip)  works very well for perfect parts.
