XL Wing Strut attach point question
« on: June 03, 2020, 02:17:50 PM »
Looking at Leonard's plans page 34 the front spar wing strut fitting board is 3/4"x2" and the rear spar the same both @ 29 degrees however, on the next page 35 no mention of the front spar strut fitting board but the rear spar strut fitting board is marked 2 1/2" wide? I'm sure I'm missing something. Can anyone clarify for me which is it? And it looks like I will have to make at least 1 strut fitting to figure out exactly where these boards go because at 29 degrees there will be a little wiggle room fore or aft within the 15" space. Yes?

either will work - 2 inch or 2 1/2 inch.  I believe I went with 2 1/2 inch when I did mine but the point is you are going to attach a 1-inch fitting to it.  A little wider gives you a little more wiggle room to get it lined up as needed :)

Little confusing. Looking at it again, Page 35 depicts the back side of the spar. Just not noted whereas page 34 is noted "front side". The 2 1/2" measurement I think pertains to the width of a piece of 1/8" ply glued over the 2"x3/4" strut attach board. The 1/8" ply pieces go over the 3/4" filler boards and then the root and strut fittings go on top of the ply. I'm still not sure what he means by "Top to bottom with 1/8" ply over both sides" on page 35. Is the 3/4" filler board suppose to have the full length web on the front and an exact matching piece the size of the filler board on the back and then ANOTHER 2" wide piece of ply over that for the root fitting to be mounted too?

Also, I like to follow the plans and went and tapered the front spar caps down to 1/2". I crossed out 1/4" and replaced with 1/2". Can't remember but assume there was a change notice somewhere about that. Anyway, I was struggling a bit whether to even do it and to take the time measuring, calculating, and clamping down a fence at the same time I kept hearing in my head Leonard saying don't waste time building fancy jigs, build the plane! So I just marked a line from the 34" point to a 1/2" at the tip and carefully hand fed them on my table saw. Came out perfect. BTW, the two cut off pieces (top/bottom cap, left front spar) only weighed 2.45oz.

I think you are tracking - I forgot about the 1/8inch pieces that overlap and they are wider than the main 2inch spacer.  Posting a pic of mine - you can see the main spacer a little behind the 1/8th ply.

I tapered my spar caps to 1/2" too. Didn't save much weight, but at least they sorta match the plans. One thing I did differently to my spar caps was table saw cut an 8-degree bevel on the front upper caps before building the spars. Plans said 10-degrees, but I made a little jig to test the angle of my nose ribs to spar to ribs and came up with 8°. I made my front spar cap spacing to match my test jig instead of using the plans dimension. Ribs, spars, and nose ribs fit with no sanding or grinding the upper spar cap.

Found a thread explaining this with excellent pictures (I'm a visual guy). Thanks Scott. https://www.eaglersnest.com/forum/index.php?topic=1477.msg8200;topicseen#msg8200

Really? I bought the supplemental plans from Ironside. I didn't receive these color pics? Just rolled up prints.

I think the confusion may be from the 2 1/2" wide scab plates that are over the 2 inch blocks. See the hidden lines in the drawing?

Hi Builders!
The color ones (group on one sheet)  were added to the entire packet perhaps two years ago, but in reality they are just more explanations of various areas of the wing build and can most likely be found at the previously mentioned web site location. (of free pdf's)
As always, if there are any areas of the build that simply do not seem to be covered let me know.  And secondly these prints will NOT show you how to build the whole aircraft, that is what your plans are for. These cover all the little details that many wanted to know (on the wing build) . I get but one or two questions a year now, so am feeling the whole build process is getting pretty well covered.

To that level, I think they did well.  Over the years I have tweaked them a tiny bit, but only the addition of the colored sheet would be considered a large tweak. :D

I can't express enough, that great care needs to be taken when installing your wing strut strap bracket bolts, (say that four times fast)  that you DO NOT drill through the spar cap. This is shown with measurements on the FREE pdf's.

Best of success to all.
