Hmmm.
« on: July 02, 2025, 07:47:26 AM »
The Magnificent Men and their Flying Machines is playing on Youtube right now. It always gives me a grin, and Bullet was built with that thought in mind.  :) So.. off on a dawn patrol this morning when I saw some hint of rain on the wind screen. Hmmm. No clouds, I probably should head back and investigate. A little oil is like a little blood. Looks bad, but normally not fatal.Turned toward the aerodrome, and yikes! Broken oil pressure gauge line? Pressure line to the #1 cylinder? Throttled back to 1800 or so and headed direct to 2II3.  :) I'm glad it isn't more than 10 minutes or so..not a good time for an off airport landing, the corn is chest high or better and the soybeans just might put Bullet on his back. Oil pressure held, and we landed without issue.

Cleaned up the worse part of the mess and baby powdered the general area. I was *assuming* it was either at the block or head..

Nope. Apparently the pressure line to #1 has failed internally (!!!) just below the Adel clamp. I've never heard of such a thing..

I was just thinking as I did the preflight this morning, that this is the driest aircraft engine I've ever operated. It doesn't burn oil, leak oil, or oil the bottom 2 cylinders.. ::)
This will be a fine mess to clean up.

Glad you made it back without any damage to anything.  Superior judgement makes superior piloting skills unnecessary...

Ok, so I hopped on the bike and ran down to Earl's on Gasoline Alley in Indy.

I've used them for years for high performance motorcycle and car stuff. Handed the guy the hose and he said, "This looks like it came from far away without very good manufacturing equipment. Go for a ride and come back in an hour."
So I did.
When I came back, he handed the old and new one to me and said, "This just may be the crappiest hose assembly I've ever seen. You will never have to worry about the new one ever failing. It's PTFE inner with stainless outer. Ten dollars and eighty three cents, please and thank you."  :)

So.
If I had a Verner with this hose, I'd send it to Earl's and get it replaced. Don't tell them it's for an airplane, though. They do all kinds of Indy car stuff, but won't work on airplanes..I learned that a long time ago, too. If he had asked I was ready to say it was for an off road vehicle from the Czech Republic. I cannot tell a lie.
I'll go ahead and do a dissection on the old one, but I can see already it's just a thin rubber hose inside.

I was looking at that hose yesterday on my V3 that's never run.  I'll look into changing it.

Chuck, with the prompting of your pictures above I pulled that hose off my still dry V3.  Wow, what a cheap hose and fittings!  The new hose feels loose in the braid.  Kinda like those plastic braids that are used to dress up hoses under a car hood.  And the fittings!  The pictures are exactly what they looked like when I removed them.  What kind of fittings are those?  I've not seen anything like them.  Did your hose guys have any problem matching them?  I'm tempted to pull the fittings then go on with Aluminum AN fittings, THEN remake the hose.  What do you think?

Eeeks! They just reused my fittings and o rings. They appeared to be fine. You'll be dealing with converting AN to metric, though.
Shirley  :) it can be done. Hang in there.. I had a cosmic half hour flight last night.. T shirt and shorts, smooth air, and the little Verner just humming away. Life is good.. ;)
