Seatbelt attach point
« on: November 18, 2025, 05:27:46 PM »
I'm trying to figure out how thick of metal I should be using for the seatbelt attach points.  I have on hand some .064" sheet 4130 but gut feeling is that I should use thicker.  This is really a question for an engineer.  Any engineers here want to pipe in?

I would make the thickness the same as the thickness of the metal attachment points on the harness. My harness has 3/32" thick attach plates.

Thank you, and I agree, it only makes sense.
That is a nice looking seat belt.  Where did you decide to attach the shoulder harness?  My thought, even though it's a bit low, is to weld a tab between two tubes at the cluster above station 4.

I welded a crossbar back there... I was able to eliminate the seatbelt brackets & the bolts, saving weight as well... My seat belt is similar to Keith's... It doesn't have the disconnect in the top, but had 2 metal brackets where his only has the one (those are what I removed & wrapped around added tube)...  Here's the one I ordered...  https://www.amazon.com/dp/B087JK6GHV

I plan on attaching my upper harness to the tube running from the wing mount tube to the top rear longeron. I wanted the mounting point to be higher than my shoulders.

Thanks guys for the pictures.  Pappy, I'm leaning towds your location.  I had already thought of doing something in that cluster to hold the harness and beef-up that cluster area.  So I finally feel I've enough oppionions to form my own, ha.  So hopefully tomorrow (Thurs) I'll finish the day with some new attach points.

Who knew a amazon had LEXL harnesses in stock.  I've been in touch with CROW and like thier offerings so now I've another to compare them with.

Pappy, that seatbelt was reduced on amazon for b-friday to something like $56, so I pulled the trigger with some doubt about using 3" webbing.  It arrived today and will be returned tomorrow.  3" is way too large for my liking.  Both my car and Sportsman use 2".  Too bad.

Here is a pic of my belt mountpoints, finished today.

On mine, only the padding was 3" the webbing is 2"... I think I may have sent wrong one... SO SORRY... I think this is the right one... It's $48 on bFriday sale now... But I see you did the same thing with the bar, seems to make the most sense for me...  Looking good...
