XL - wing Diagonals via the plans
« on: March 06, 2026, 07:15:41 AM »
Hi All (et specifically those of you who build your wings per plans),

I'm ready to glue in my diagonals but first I'l like to know how to deal with the 1/4 height difference.
What I mean by this is... the front of the diagonal sits flush with the top of the 3/4" main lower spar cap, the middle of the diagonal rests on the top of the lower rib stringer (is that the correct term?), but on the rear lower spar cap since it is only 5/8" tall the diagonal sits a bit taller than the rear spar cap.

Stated another way, since the front-lower-spar-cap is 7/8" tall, the Diagonals 3/4" tall, and the rear-spar-cap 5/8" tall I would figure there to be 1/8" difference.  But the lower rib sits Bottom ~flush with the bottom of the front spar and the lower rib sits under the rear spar.  Ah, I guess I should draw a picture, but I know those of you who have built per palns know what I'm talking about.  Back in a moment with a pic...

Seems I've seen somewhere a post about this but have been unable to find it.  There has been a lot written on the diagonals still I'm unable to find what I need.

Ok so, a few pics.  Dimensions should be to scale except for the lengths.  If the front end is lowered the rear teeters up and visa-versa.  Two solutions I was thinking.  1. notch the diagonal where it crosses the rib stringer.  2. Set the front level with the top of the main-bottom-spar and place a small block on top of the rear-bottom-spar.

Since the difference in height between the 3/4" diagonal and the 5/8" spar cap is only 1/8", I added a 1/8" ply spacer to make up the difference in height. This allows for a triangular doubler over the spacer & diagonal for reinforcement.
