Hall wind meter error
« on: April 18, 2026, 06:09:21 AM »
My hall meter consistently reads about 20mph low. I have it on the jury strut like other people. Any thoughts?

If mine was off that much I would try and take the top off. Then I would wipe down the rod and try to clean the floater hole, maybe with soap & water. I might even try some dry lube on the rod, just wiping mostly off with a diaper or lint free paper towel.

If it tested OK out the car window, your air entry angle must be slightly off on the plane. Have you already tried turning it in various directions?

Mine is remarkably (to me) accurate. Mounted on the right jury strut.

Do the LE's really need an airspeed indicator at all?  Is it mostly a reference for the max speed?  At slow speeds don't you mostly fly by the seat-of-the pants method?  My build is still a long ways from flying and I do for sure plan on having an airspeed indicator (just because) yet I'm curious as to how most of you flying use the info.

Youre basically right, however i need to do max performance takeoffs to see if i can get out of a short grass field. So i need to climb as steep as i can and of course i dont want to risk stalling so close to the ground

Hmmm, wonder if there is a light weight slow speed AOA indicator.  For STOL flying AOA can't be beat.

There is a tutorial on YouTube about a home built AOA that uses your smartphone as the screen. Really simple design. Look up "dan_der_flieger" I'm building one without all the 3D printed stuff. Uses an easy to get sensor and microcontroller.     The 4th version of this is the best

That looks like a fun project.  Let us know how well it works.

Mine will cost about $50, not including a smartphone. I made an aerodynamic shape of balsa to hold the AS5600 sensor. The vane is also balsa. I'm mounting it on a short carbon fiber tube which will carry the signal into a small plastic project box mounted under the wing. The Arduino & battery will go in the box. I haven't completed the electronics, just the sensor and vane. Don't know when I'll try and complete it. Still working on plane.

Hey I like that... could we make that into the "cross" brace on the jury strut??? I wasn't planning to use the cross brace part... but maybe on the that far side I could...  I have the stuff to make the vacuum kind, but this electronic kind is doable... OK - now my brain is rolling... Can we make an electronic airspeed indicator there too???? Using something like this in the same pod....

There are several RC airspeed items available. I bought the sensor and miniature pitot tube for the one I will make if I don't like the Hall Airspeed Indicator.
