Wing rib plans
« on: August 01, 2020, 12:04:10 PM »
Good evening all,

I've printed out the pages (scaled up to what I hope is the right size) of the Legal Eagle wing rib from Leonard's plans and carefully joined them together.  The worry I have is that the specifications state a wing chord of 55 inches and at the moment my drawings are coming out at about 54 inches! The odd thing is that the scale on the leading edge diagram appears to be correct.

I just need to make a gross error check of the scale an wondered if anyone could give me the exact distance (preferably in mm) between the rear face of the front spar and the front face of the rear spar? This will be way more accurate than the scale on the leading edge drawing.

Thank's for your help folks

I haven't looked at the plans in a good spell but, are you taking into account the trailing edge strip?

Attached is a photo that may be of help. The trailing edge is not shown in the photo and would add another inch to the chord. I'm using the Iron Designs rib drawing, not the one that came with the original plans.

Leonard is still selling full size rib patterns. I was able to order some for the LE just last week.

An alternate to using Leonard's full-size rib drawing is the Iron Designs drawing. Quite a few of us are using that full-size rib drawing and other full-size templates that are part of his drawings set. You might want to take a look: https://irondesigniowa.com/product/legal-eagle-xl-wing-plans-supplemental/ If you use these drawings you have to add the rearmost upright (see photo) since it is not shown on the wing rib plan.

Thank you all for the info. I reprinted the rib (again) and it was still coming out short so I've emailed Leonard (directly through his website) and got a very quick response - he's very kindly offered to mail me a full size wing rib drawing.

I have just joined the group, thanks for letting me in!  I off-loaded the plans from the betterhalfvw website.  When I printed it, it is about 1/4 of an A4 page.  Anyway I have a plan to enlarge it.  Leonard tried to post me the full size rib drawing but the Post Office can not detect my address here in South Africa, so it can not be posted.  I read on this forum that I can use the Irondesign wing plans.  I suppose the LE wings are just shorter than the XL wings?  If someone can just confirm please.  I have also not receive a number for the electronic copy of the plans, I will ask Leonard to issue me one.  I already saw some beautifull wing construction photos on this forum, it will really help me.  Regards  William Wilkinson, Secunda, South Africa

Welcome to the Forum. IronDesigns offers a full size rib drawing and many other detail drawings but they are not plans. I used the IronDesigns wing rib drawing and his nose rib, aileron end rib, and wing rib gusset patterns, but I am building my XL to the official Milholland plans design. You asked if the LE & XL wings are just different in length. The wings are different length, but the wing mounting system is different, too. You can use the same wing rib pattern for either plane, but you should follow the Milholland plans for other features.

I'm doing the same. There is a "gotcha" in the Iron Design plans, though. They don't show the rear 1/8" plate at the root of the front spar or the front 1/8" plate at the root of the rear spar.
Leonard's don't either, except on one page where he mentions, "1/8" plywood both sides. I looked at the Iron Design plans top view of the wing, and thought.. ok the plywood is only on one side, and made the two root ribs to suit. I'm now modifying those ribs. It would have been much easier to do that in the jig instead of afterward.
Just a heads up..
